Champagne Louis Barthélémy – Brut Saphir 2005

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2013

(around 35 Euros per bottle)

Property of the Chancel family since 2001, who also own Château Val Joanis in the Rhône Valley, the Champagne House of Louis Barthélémy continues and sustains the champenois tradition producing around 50,000 bottles of Champagne a year, essentially destined for export.

An evocative and poetic name. The bottle has a simple and clean look with an original violet-coloured foil wrapper.

Appearance :

·        Golden yellow

·        Delicate perlage

·        Subtle bead

·        Bright

Nose :

·        Alluring and winning, a source of delicious sensations

·        Enveloping at first nose, then revealing generous toasted notes, of toasted bread and pastries, obtained thanks to lengthy ageing sur lattes (5 years) and perfectly controlled

·        The nose then develops towards remarkable complexity, with scents of dried fruit (apricot, citrus fruit, hazelnut), honey and spices (cinnamon, cocoa ...), subtly bolstered by a hint of fresh butter, a signature of the clear dominance of the Chardonnay (95%)

Palate :

·        Exceptional presence, the voluminous palate expresses great power, thanks to the 5% Pinot Noir and superb ripeness of the grapes of 2005, together with smoky, toasty notes, highlighted by a delicious mineral freshness, the result of carefully selecting the first run wine (cuvée) during pressing

·        Elegant effervescence

·        Finish with subtle spicy notes

·        Remarkable length on the palate

This Cuvée Brut Saphir 2005 reveals a strong personality providing a wonderful image of the savoir-faire of the Champagne House of Louis Barthélémy, and Chef de cave, Jean Chancel.

Even if it seduces you as an aperitif, this is above all a dinner Champagne, to accompany a first course, or better still Chicken supreme.
