Champagne Krug – Vintage 2000

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2013

(around 180 Euros per bottle)

Mythical Champagne

Founded in 1843 in Reims, the Champagne House of Krug is still true to the philosophy of its visionary founder Johann Joseph Krug, only producing Cuvée Prestige, in its continual search of “Champagne of unrivalled quality”.

Traditional, elegant and luxurious looking.

Appearance :

·       Intense gold

·       Perlage of rare finesse

·       Bright

Nose :

·       There is a great temptation to forget all that you know, cancelling all the champenois references, allowing oneself to be penetrated by the aromatic symphony, that nears perfection, an unexpected harmony, simple and elaborate at the same time, continually renewed, and concentrate on the intense sensations and delight

·       Winy, intense with remarkable complexity

·       Scents of candied citrus fruit, exotic fruit, honey, raisin, dried apricot, expressions of the 45% Chardonnay together with notes of cherry liqueur thanks to the 15% Pinot Meunier

·       Nuances of cocoa, brioche, pastries and grilled almonds, delicately toasted and roasted, the result of patient ageing sur lattes, before disgorgement

·       A hint of vanilla and spices, perhaps a souvenir of the distant storage of the base wines in old oak barrels (average age of 20) and alcoholic fermentation

Palate :

·       Freshness and minerality, the leading motif of this Champagne House, a common element of all the Cuvée, a delicious surprise for a Champagne of such maturity, obtained by carefully selecting the first run wine at the first pressing (cuvée), malolactic fermentation often not carried out and a intentionally low dosage (6g/L of sugar added at disgorgement)

·       A slow and steady opening leading to a enveloping, complex roundness, perhaps expressed by the 42% Pinot Noir

·       Endless finish, subtly spicy

·       Impressive length on the palate

With this Vintage 2000 from the best terroir in Champagne (Avize, Oger, Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Bouzy, Verzy, Verzenay), Eric Lebel, Chef de Cave of the House, presents fabulous, unforgettable Champagne that is both traditional and incomparable, which is, true to Krug tradition, produced with superb winemaking expertise, intuition and infinite patience.

Serve at 8-9°C. Although delicious with gourmet meals, on its own it delivers truly amazing emotions.
