Champagne Bourdaire-Gallois – Cuvée Millésime 2005

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2013

(approx. 32 Euros per bottle)

Located in Pouillon, in Massif de Saint Thierry, in the heart of the Petite Montagne de Reims area, on approx. 5 hectares of age-old vineyard (41 years and older), cultivated using environmentally friendly methods and consisting of 85% Pinot Meunier, 10% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir, the Champagne House of Bourdaire-Gallois has produced and sold quality Champagne since 2002.

Original and well designed, predominantly red.

Appearance :

·        Pale gold with green glints

·        Fine, abundant perlage

·        Subtle bead

·        Crystal clear

Nose :

·        Continually evolving, elusive and mischievous, thanks to a minimal sulphur dioxide treatment during vinification

·        Opening with exuberance, of candied red fruits (plum, cherry, blackcurrant and strawberry), kirsch and honey, signature of the 10% Pinot Meunier

·        The nose then slowly, patiently reveals gentle notes of cinnamon, vanilla and caramel, consisting of delicate woody notes, perhaps the result of vinification of 6 base wines in oak barrels (6 years)

·        Then followed by aromas of roasted coffee, cocoa, chocolate, mocha and blond tobacco expressed by the lengthy ageing sur lattes of the bottles before disgorgement

·        The nose then reveals alluring notes of butter and brioche, together with candied citrus fruits (lemon, clementine), raisin and dried apricot, thanks to 45% Chardonnay in the blending

Palate :

·        Fresh and mineral attack, almost iodate, a noble expression of the terroir of Massif de Saint Thierry and the distinctive silica soils, thanks to a decidedly low dosage with 2.5g/L of sugar added at disgorgement

·        The palate then develops an ample and dense roundness, both honey-like and structured, an expression of 45% Pinot Noir

·        Revealing the citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit) perceived at the nose

·        Peppery finish on the palate, enhanced by a delicious bitterness

·        Good length on the palate

This Cuvée Millésime 2005 by the Champagne House of Bourdaire-Gallois expresses all the savoir-faire of David Bourdaire, the producer. A wonderful reward for his meticulous and thoughtful approach to wine growing and production.

A true dinner Champagne, delightful with poultry or grilled red meat dishes.
