Champagne Hilaire Leroux et Fils – Millésime 2008 Premier Cru

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2016

(around 19 euros per bottle)

Luxurious and careful presentation.

Aspect :

·        Pale gold, glinting.
·        Very fine bubbles, dynamic.
·        Delicate bead of bubbles, persistent on the periphery of the flute after service.

Nose :

·        Radiant and sensual.
·        First revealing fragrances of red and black fruits (plum, blackberry, blackcurrant and strawberry) coupled with hints of cherry liqueur and soft spices, signatures of the Pinot Noir (35%) and the Pinot Meunier (15%).
·        The Chardonnay (50%) then unveils some fine scents of citrus fruits, apricot and peach compote, apple, pear, almond, hazelnut and white flowers.
·        Patience is rewarded by the appearance of warm aromas of caramel, honey and marzipan, expressions of the great maturity of the Champagne, result of 5 years of ageing on laths of the bottles with autolysis of the prise de mousse yeasts, before disgorgement.

Palate :

·        Pure and dense attack supported by a remarkable minerality, reinforced by the rigorous selection of the first juices (cuvée) during the soft pressing of the grapes harvested by hand and by the timely stop of the malolactic fermentation of the base wines.
·        The mouth then becomes deep and round, almost structured and always mineral, lulled by the refined effervescence.
·        Tastily acidulous finish, underlined by a touch of spices.
·        Great length on the palate.

With this Millésime 2008 Premier Cru, Patrice Leroux, its producer, was able to compose the inspired blending of varietals and terroirs to offer us a high-level Champagne.

To taste from aperitif to meal, with a rack of lamb with thyme, for example.

Fourth generation of wine growers located in Chigny-les-Roses, in the heart of the Mountain of Reims, the Champagne House Hilaire Leroux et Fils passionately cultivates its vineyard of little over 7 hectares, planted with the 3 champenois varietals. A rigorous oenology gives birth each year to around 60,000 bottles of quality Champagnes.
