Champagne Moët et Chandon – Grand Vintage 2002

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2013

(around 48 Euros per bottle)

Authentic ambassador of Champagne, with 29.4 million bottles sold in 2010, the Champagne House of Moët et Chandon, founded in 1743, has around 1,200 hectares of vineyard (75% Grand Crus and Premier Crus), representing 30% of its grape supplies. The Champagne House of Moët et Chandon is part of the Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy Group (LVMH) selling 55.8 million bottles of Champagne in 2010 (78% of which was exported), that is 17.5% of its Champagne production.

The look is luxurious, simple and original. The label is reminiscent of the inscriptions once made in liquid chalk on the tables (planchots) used to mark the stacks of bottles in the Champagne cellars.

Appearance :

·        Pale gold

·        Fine plentiful perlage

·        Elegant bead

·        Bright

Nose :

·        Gentle and complex, swiftly delivering intense emotions

·        The first nose is marked by candied citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit), together with delicate hints of vervain and mint, expressed by the 51% Chardonnay in the blend

·        A sensual and charming development towards sweet and pulpy aromas, true olfactory magic

·        Notes of almond and marzipan, together with superb complexity with a base of plum, apple, pear, hazelnut and improbable alcoholic fragrances, mingle with notes of roasted coffee, blond tobacco and also cocoa, expressions of the great maturity of this Champagne, obtained by patient ageing sur lattes of the bottles before disgorgement, stored for 7 years in the cellar, the lengthiest period for a Grand Vintage since 1930

Palate :

·     A lively and dense attack, thanks to low dosage of 5.5g/L of sugar added at disgorgement, swiftly replaced by a enveloping and smooth roundness, with remarkable depth, thanks to the 26% Pinot Noir and 23% Pinot Meunier

·     Mineral and structured finish, spicy aromas (pepper, cinnamon, liquorice)

·     Impressive length on the palate

With this Grand Vintage 2002, Benoît Gouez, Chef de Cave of the House, expresses all his wine making knowledge and signs his name to superb Champagne, a beautiful representation of the 2002 vintage characterised by maturity, balance and exceptional grape health. It reveals great presence, a source of intense pleasure, symbolising all the savoir-faire of Moët et Chandon.

Equally good on its own as an aperitif, ideal with gourmet meals and why not during the Christmas festivities with a traditional turkey stuffed with chestnuts.
