Champagne Alain Bergère – Réserve

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2013

(around 15 Euros per bottle)

Founded in Etoges in 1636, the Champagne House of Alain Bergère carefully cultivates a vineyard area of 15 hectares, consisting of small plots scattered among Etoges and Château-Thierry, planted with three champenois varietals (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) and a little Petit Meslier. Producing Champagne with a continual eye on quality and respect for the environment.

A traditional look.

Appearance :

·        Golden yellow

·        Fine perlage

·        Fine bead of bubbles

·        Brilliant and limpid

Nose :

·        Complex, mighty and delicious, thanks to particularly light sulphitage throughout the production

·        Aromas of candied citrus fruits, apricot and raisin, a good expression of the 80% Chardonnay from the terroir of Etoges

·        Exuberant maturity, with brioche-like and toasted notes, together with honey due to yeast autolysis during the perfectly controlled lengthy ageing sur lattes of the bottles (5 years)

Palate :

·        Initially smooth and enveloping, thanks to the 10% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier, swiftly accompanied by a refreshing liveliness, obtained by carefully selecting the cuvée, free run wine extracted during grape pressing and intentionally low dosage of sugar, 7g/L added at disgorgement

·        Spicy aromas (vanilla, pepper) and caramel

·        Smooth effervescence

·        Captivating finish

·        Good length on the palate

This Cuvée Réserve reveals all the talent of Alain Bergère, its producer, who has expertly highlighted all the qualities of the 2006 vintage, representing 90% of the blending and completed with 10% base wines from 2005 and 2004. A reward for environmentally friendly wine growing and production, with both land cultivation and cover planting, and meticulous and skilful wine making.

Drink as an aperitif, but also during a meal among friends, with Sole almondine stuffed with asparagus, or with dessert with baked cinnamon apples.
