Terroir

Terroir: the combination of soil, varietals (vine varieties) and climate. The grapes originate from various parts of the Champagne region: Mountain of Reims, Côte des Blancs, Marne Valley and the vineyards of Aube (Côte des Bar).   Although the majority of soils in the Champagne region is calcareous and the climate very southern, none of the terroirs in Champagne are the same. Therefore, of the 320 terroirs (or villages) officially registered in Champagne, only 42 are classed as Premier Cru and 17 are Grand Cru (only 13% of the champenois vineyard). The wine grower and cellar master, with their choices, interpret the terroir of origin of the grapes used to produce the champagne. Even if champagne is a blended wine, it is also and above all a terroir wine.
