Champagne Tarlant – Cuvée Louis

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2015

(approximately 59 euros a bottle)

Wine grower in Oeuilly since 1687, the Champagne Tarlant grows its 14-hectare vineyard, inspiring from organic and biodynamic farming with working and grass cover of the soils, to craft Champagnes of character.

Luxurious and sophisticated presentation. Date of disgorgement written on the back label (February 20th, 2013).

Visual Aspect:

·        Amber.

·        Fine bubbles.

·        Delicate and persistent bead of bubbles.

·        Generous tears.

Nose:

·        Heady and complex.

·        Blooming aromas of crystallized red fruits and kirsch, expressions of the Pinot Noir (50%).

·        Accomplished maturity, with warm notes of honey and coffee, evolving towards cocoa, the result of the very long ageing on laths of the bottles before disgorgement (12 years).

·        Woodiness, with nuances of vanilla and white pepper, obtained by the vinification and élevage of the base wines in oak barrels of 4 wines (4 years).

·        The Chardonnay (50%) finally shows itself, with scents of citrus, apple, toasted almond and hazelnut, of apricot and raisins, iodized and mentholated.

Palate:

·        Rare intensity, accompanied by a coating heat, certainly due to the regular stirring of the lees in the barrels during the 8 months of élevage, supported by a right tension, allowed by the sensible blocking of the malolactic fermentation and by the very light dosage with only 3 g/L of sugar added at disgorgement.

·        Nice minerality, signature of the chalky terroir of origin, with limited yields, planted in 1946 and 1948 on the locality of Les Crayons at Oeuilly, facing northeast and northwest, in the Marne Valley.

·        Impressive length.

With this Cuvée Louis, Jean-Mary Tarlant and his son Benoit managed to find the right assembly, with 85% of 1999 complemented with 15% of the previous years (1998, 1997 and 1996), and practiced an inspired enology, to offer us a deep and moving Champagne.

To enjoy during a festive meal, to accompany a lamb with flageolet beans for example.
