Champagne Mailly Grand Cru – L’Intemporelle Millésime 2008

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2015

(approximately 52 euros a bottle)

The Champagne Mailly Grand Cru, created in 1929, relies on its vineyard of 75 hectares exclusively located at Mailly-Champagne, in the north of the Montagne de Reims, planted with 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, grown by 75 winegrowers in the greatest respect of the environment to craft and market 500,000 bottles of Champagne every year, signatures inspired by this exceptional Grand Cru.

Sober, bright and refined presentation for this cuvée created in 1990. Numbered bottles (15,240 produced).

Visual aspect:

·        Golden, intense.

·        Very fine bubbles.

·        Delicate ring of bubbles.

Nose:

·        Harmonious and sensual.

·        Blooming red fruit aromas (raspberry, blackcurrant and cherry), with delicate spices, expression of the 60% of Pinot Noir.

·        Subtle scents of citrus, apple, pear, almond, chestnut and white flowers, thanks to the Chardonnay (40%), with shades of exotic fruits, maybe because of the slow realization of the alcoholic fermentation of the base wines at 16°C.

·        Later, the cuvee reveals its maturity, with sweet shades of honey and caramel, result of 5 years of ageing on laths of the bottles before disgorgement.

Palate:

·        Pure first taste, with a cheering tension.

·        Remarkable presence with a rare minerality, expression of the terroir Grand Cru of Mailly Champagne, where the grapes have been selected (Les Crayats, Les Coutures and the Roses for the Chardonnay, Les Chalois, Les Côtes, Les Godats, Les Baraquines and Les Longues Raies for the Pinot Noir).

·        Impressive length on the palate.

With this cuvée L’Intemporelle Millésime 2008, Hervé Dantan, cellar master of the Champagne Mailly Grand Cru, and Sébastien Moncuit, his successor in 2013, managed to master the by-plot vinification to propose us an exceptional Champagne, dense and elegant at the same time.

To taste for the aperitif or during a meal with a gambas and grilled vegetables tartlet.
