Champagne Jean Milan – Grande Réserve 1864

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2015

(approximately 35 euros a bottle)

Established in 1864, the Champagne Jean Milan grows with passion his 6-hectare vineyard, settled in the Grand Cru Oger in the Côte des Blancs, exclusively planted with Chardonnay, to craft and market approximately 110,000 bottles of Champagnes of character every year.

Sober and luxurious presentation. Ancestral hemp wire-cap, maintained by a red wax seal, for this cuvee tribute to the year of the creation of the house.

Visual aspect:

·        Golden with green tinges.

·        Fine bubbles.

·        Delicate chain of bubbles.

Nose:

·        Moving, it brings us in an aromatic sensual and disturbing universe.

·        Cheering maturity, result of 8 years of ageing on laths of the bottles before disgorgement, with notes of caramel, chocolate and roasted coffee, supported by a subtle woodiness, slightly spicy, obtained thanks to the vinification and élevage of the base wines in oak barrels from 10 to 15 years old, bought second-hand in Burgundy.

·        The Chardonnay, exclusive grape variety of the cuvée, then reveals, with blooming aromas of green apple, chrystallised citrus (lemon and grapefruit), chestnut, mint and white flowers, delicately salty.

Palate:

·        Pure first taste, inimitable mark of the Oger Grand Cru soil, reinforced by the adjusted dosage, with only 6g/L of sugar added at disgorgement.

·        Then the palate reveals a real vital force, deep and ample, with a sweet and unctuous effervescence.

·        We find the discreet woodiness in the finish.

·        Impressive length on the palate.

With this Cuvée Grande Réserve 1864, Jean Charles Milan and his sister Caroline, winegrowers of the Champagne Jean Milan, managed to revive the enological practices of former days and found the right blend (majority of 2004, complemented by 2003), to propose us a peculiar, charming and rare cuvée, a source of unforgettable feelings.

To taste from the aperitif to the meal, to match with scallops of Normandy with black truffle, for example.
