Champagne Georges Vesselle – Cuvée Juline Grand Cru

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2015

(approximately 33 euros a bottle)

Established in 1951 then developed with passion by Georges Vesselle, the eponymous Champagne grows its vineyard of 17 hectares in the Grand Cru of Bouzy, planted with 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. Approximately 200,000 bottles of highly expressive Champagnes are produced and marketed every year.

Original and elegant presentation. Poetic name, born from the mix of the first names of both granddaughters of Georges Vesselle (Julie and Pauline), in honor of which the cuvée was created in 1984.

Visual aspect:

·        Pale gold.

·        Very fine bubbles.

·        Delicate ring of bubbles.

Nose:

·        Harmonious and complex, thanks to the blending inspired by the best vintages of the house, 5 to 10 years old.

·        First marked by the dominant Pinot Noir (80%) with notes of chrystallised red fruits (strawberry, raspberry and red currant), with delicate spices.

·        Scents of very ripe apple and pear, apricot, peach, almond and chestnut, subtly salty and mentholated, marks of the Chardonnay (20%).

·      The blooming maturity of the cuvée is finally revealing, with warm scents of brioche, honey and caramel, slightly toasted and roasted, result of 5 years of ageing on laths of the bottles closed by a cork maintained by a staple, before disgorgement.

Palate:

·        Dense and fresh first taste, due to the selection of the first juices (cuvée) during the pressing of grapes, and by the adjusted dosage with only 5 g/L of sugar added at disgorgement.

·        The palate then reveals fleshy and savoury, thanks to the realization of the malolactic fermentation of the base wines.

·        Well-balanced finish, barely spicy.

·        Great length on the palate.

With this Cuvée Juline Grand Cru, Eric and Bruno Vesselle, the producers, managed to set their enological creativity in the service of the prestigious terroir of Bouzy, to offer us an accomplished Champagne.

To taste from the aperitif to the meal, with a pigeon and foie gras tart, for example.
