Champagne Alfred Gratien – Brut Millésime 2000

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2015

(approximately 58 euros a bottle)

Four generations of cellar masters of the Jaeger family and a perfect quality of the grapes thanks to faithful wine growers allow the Champagne Alfred Gratien to immortalize the philosophy of its creator Alfred Gratien (1864). Property of the group Henkell et Co since 2000, the house relies on its 1.56-hectare vineyard in the Grand Crus of the Côte des Blancs, to craft and market exceptional Champagnes in voluntarily limited quantity of 250,000 bottles a year.

Traditional and luxurious presentation.

Visual Aspect :

·        Golden, bright.

·        Very fine bubbles.

·        Elegant bead of bubbles, persistent.

Nose :

·        Sensual, with an infinite richness.

·        Aromas of honey, Viennese pastries, evolving towards chocolate and roasted coffee, the expressions of the right maturity of the Champagne, served by a subtle woodiness obtained by 12 years of ageing on laths of the corked bottles maintained by a staple, before disgorgement.

·        Scents of crystallized citrus and white flowers, apple and pear compote, apricot and raisins, signatures of the majority of Chardonnay (64%).

·        Delightful notes of red fruits thanks to the Pinot Noir (25%) and in the Pinot Meunier (11%).

Palate :

·        Pure, racy first taste, thanks to the blocking of the malolactic fermentation of the base wines, trademark of the house.

·        The palate then becomes deep and fleshy thanks to the adjusted dosage, with 8.5g/L of sugar added at disgorgement, punctuated with a hint of spices.

·        Exceptionnal length in the mouth.

With this Brut Millésime 2000, Nicolas Jaeger, the cellar master of the Champagne Alfred Gratien managed to choose the best vineyards in a 40-km radius around Epernay, vinify them and mature them separately in 228-litres oak barrels of at least 4 years, selected in Chablis, to offer us an unforgettable cuvée, in the lineage of the previous ones.

To enjoy for the aperitif, or during a meal, with pan-fried sweet bread, for example.
